Shipping can get expensive if you don’t know what to expect. Here are some basic pointers to help you understand why Camp Shippers' flat rate pricing is a GREAT DEAL!
National parcel carrier rating is based on 3 critical points:
- Distance - The distance between the pickup and delivery zip codes. The longer the distance, the more costly the transportation.
- Chargeable Weight - National Carriers look at the actual weight of what is being shipped and compare it to the dimensional weight. (The formula for dimensional weight is Length x Width x Height)/166 = Dim weight in lbs. National carriers Chargeable Weight is the higher of actual or dimensional weight. Ex. If your bag weighs 42 lb. but the dimensional weight is 82 lb., the chargeable weight is 82 lbs!
- Accessorial charges – This is where it gets expensive. These are charges above and beyond the basic chargeable rate of transporting a bag or box from pickup to delivery.
Examples of accessorial charges include: On Call Pick Up ($4), Residential Delivery ($3.25), Fuel Surcharge (7% of basic transport cost), Out of Delivery Area ($3.25), Additional handling ($8.50), Oversize ($55)
Note: Camp Shippers also charges for an Oversize bag for our standard duffle service, BUT, we do not charge dimensional weight.
Airlines also look at three criteria:
- The number of bags checked: Policies vary, but airlines can charge anywhere from $0 for the first bag checked, up to $25.
- How much each bag weighs: Again, policies vary per airline but if a bag is greater than 50 lb. but less than 70 lb the overweight surcharge could range from $50 to $100 per bag. Bags weighing between 70 lb and 100 lb could have a $200 surcharge!
- The size of each bag: Airlines have altogether different rules for measuring the size of bags. The size limitation of baggage is calculated by adding the total outside dimensions of each bag, length + width + height. If the combined dimensions exceed certain airline thresholds, surcharges apply.
Examples include: American Airlines >62” = $200, JetBlue >63” = $75, Delta > 62” = $175, United >62” = $100
Important: Airline charges are cumulative. Meaning, if your bag is overweight and oversized you are susceptible to both fees – Ouch!
